Opening Ceremony
The parade of nations started at the Katrinelunds
gymnasiet on Sunday at 13:30 and lead through the
streets of Gothenburg. Many spectators were cheering at
the 26 teams coming from all over the world. The parade
ended at the court at the Götaplatsen in the centre of
Gothenburg.
After that all the teams have been introduced to the
audience by conferencier Ingvar Oldsberg. The Homeless
World Cup was opened by three speeches beginning with
Carina Lindberg, the chairman of the board of faktum.
She pointed out that because of globalisation the world
becomes much smaller and travelling around the world has
become part of everyday life, but not for everyone. With
the Homeless World Cup also disadvantaged people have
got the possibility to travel.
Michael Kleiner, United Nations head of Office for the
International Year of Sport and Physical Education 2005,
thanked the organisation team and stressed that sport is
a way to help people help themselves. To overcome
homelessness you need special solutions in a common
language - the language of football.
The president of the INSP, Mel Young, presented the
Homeless World Cup trophy coming from Graz, the city of
last year's winners. While talking about the positive
effects on the participants of the event in Graz, he
illustrated that to combat poverty and homelessness
successfully you need practical solutions like involving
concerned people. Then Mel Young declared the 2nd
Homeless World Cup open.
The Swedish anthem of the Homeless World Cup "Vi hänger
mi" was presented by the band "Gatuborgarorkestern".
The drawing of the match groups took place during the
